What Kind of Calculation Is Implied in the Money Rate of Interest?

The rate of interest is implicitly called into question by the title of this book, concerning the relationship between money and calculation. Even before extending beyond the sphere of economic relationships, the scope of calculation has been broadened within that sphere, to include money itself. Since the beginning of the modern era, in fact, money started to be, not merely the instrument of a calculation directed towards the exchange of goods, but itself the object of calculation and exchange. The rate of interest was first sanctioned by law in the sixteenth century as the legitimate price of money.
