Neuroactive steroids are crucial regulators of nervous functions. In the brain, progesterone, testosterone, and their metabolites exert their functions through complex regulation. In particular, the metabolism of these steroids and their subsequent interaction with different receptors orchestrate the fine-tuning of neuronal and glial functions. The key enzymes modulating progesterone and testosterone mechanism of action in the brain are here discussed.

Abstract

Neuroactive steroids are crucial regulators of nervous functions. In the brain, progesterone, testosterone, and their metabolites exert their functions through complex regulation. In particular, the metabolism of these steroids and their subsequent interaction with different receptors orchestrate the fine-tuning of neuronal and glial functions. The key enzymes modulating progesterone and testosterone mechanism of action in the brain are here discussed.
