The aim of this contribution is to outline the evolution of the main instruments of EU law for contrasting online hate speech, through the strands of internal market regulation on the one hand, from the e-Commerce Directive to the DSA, and the use of European criminal law on the other hand, from the Framework Decision to the recent proposal of the European Commission to extend the list of offences recognised by the European Union under Article 83 TFEU to hate speech and hate crimes.
