Senators and Senate in Procopius of Caesarea’s Historical Perspective · The paper aims to investigate Procopius’ attitude towards the senate, both in Constantinople and Rome. The historian records Justinian’s crimes against the senate ; but, at the same time, he also criticises the senators who are too compliant with the tyrant and, therefore, accessory to his regime. By doing so, Procopius becomes the spokesman for the aspirations of local notables, who were strongly disappointed by the behaviour of the elites being at the centre of power.
