The paper discusses Marco Santambrogio’s defense of a meritocratic distribution of social positions. According to Santambrogio the best qualified individuals deserve social positions in a pre-institutional sense of deserving. The paper claims that among the different arguments provided by Santambrogio to support such a thesis, the most promising one is a perfectionist argument, having radical implications for the assessment of existing societies.
