Published here is a school assignment by Grand Duke Nikolai Pavlovic that was completed in November 1812 or 1813. The assignment, entitled 'On Freedom', is interesting in our opinion because it sheds light, albeit in a fragmentary and incomplete manner, on an aspect of the future tsar's education that has been little studied. The introductory article explains the particular pedagogical and political context within which that text was elaborated. In general, the paper, while not demonstrating a solid legal education of Nicholas, disproves the tsar's widespread opinion of his total unpreparedness especially with regard to certain fundamental legal concepts.
