Delving into the Husserlian manuscripts on Phantasy, Image Consciousness and Memory which are to be found in the Husserliana XXIII, this essay aims to cast light on some ways through which the essence of the film image can be analyzed. In particular, the notions of “image object”, “iconic phantasy” and “perceptual phantasy” seem to offer a strong means of understanding the question of the transparence or opacity of the cinematographic screen, a “threshold” which can be characterized as a space of creation.

Abstract

Delving into the Husserlian manuscripts on Phantasy, Image Consciousness and Memory which are to be found in the Husserliana XXIII, this essay aims to cast light on some ways through which the essence of the film image can be analyzed. In particular, the notions of “image object”, “iconic phantasy” and “perceptual phantasy” seem to offer a strong means of understanding the question of the transparence or opacity of the cinematographic screen, a “threshold” which can be characterized as a space of creation.
