«Cortigiani, vil razza dannata». The Portrait of Vibius Crispus between Statius and Juvenal · This paper deals with the extant fragment of Statius’ De bello Germanico and its relationship with Iuv., 4, 75-118, where Statius’ text is reworked. In particular, it focuses on Vibius Crispus, a character whose behavior is widespread in the senatorial class between the first and second centuries, and is attested as an Idealtypus both in Tacitus and in the epistles of Pliny the Younger. Overall, this article argues that Juvenal’s controversy is di- rected not only against Statius (as a Court poet) but also against the senatorial class of the Trajan age.
