I focus on two distinctive features of Eugenio Lecaldano’s reconstruction of the main philosophical accounts of personal identity since the seventeenth century: first, the thought that those accounts can be construed as belonging in a continuous and uniform history; second, the claim that such history should be regarded as a progress towards the secularization of conceptions of personal identity. I suggest that both claims cannot account for the variety of views on the topic in modern philosophy.

Abstract

I focus on two distinctive features of Eugenio Lecaldano’s reconstruction of the main philosophical accounts of personal identity since the seventeenth century: first, the thought that those accounts can be construed as belonging in a continuous and uniform history; second, the claim that such history should be regarded as a progress towards the secularization of conceptions of personal identity. I suggest that both claims cannot account for the variety of views on the topic in modern philosophy.
