The subject of linguistic complexity is explored in this contribution through a reflection on the French orthographic system, whose historical evolution has led to major irregularities in its phonographic functioning and to nu- merous exceptions in the application of morphographic rules. These com- plexities, which contribute to the perception of French as a “difficult” lan- guage, have given rise to various projects of revision or programmes aimed at favouring an earlier acquisition and a more secure competence. In this essay, we aim to draw attention to a pedagogical tool developed by André Martinet and still in use in some experimental projects.

La question de la complexité linguistique est examinée dans cet article à travers une réflexion sur le système orthographique français. Son évolution historique est à l’origine de déséquilibres importants dans son fonctionnement phonographique et de nombreuses exceptions dans l’application des règles morphographiques. Ces complexités, qui contribuent à la perception du français comme une langue “difficile”, ont donné lieu à divers projets de révision ou programmes visant à favoriser une acquisition plus précoce et une compétence plus sûre. Dans cet essai, nous souhaitons attirer l’attention sur un outil pédagogique développé par André Martinet, et toujours utilisé dans certains projets expérimentaux.
