Osman Matammud is a twenty-four-year-old Somali citizen that was arrested after being recognised by fellow Somalis in a migrant reception centre in Milan. He was accused of abuse, rape, torture and murder committed against migrants at the detention camp of Bani Walid, in the Lybian desert. In 2017 he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Court of Assizes of Milan; in 2019 the Court of Appeal confirmed the verdict. Matammud case revealed the shocking conditions of detention of migrants trying to reach Europe from North Africa and the abuses perpetrated on them by the smugglers they pay to reach by boat the Italian coast. Indeed, this sentence sheds light on what is happening in the migration centres in Lybia and, more importantly, on the involvement in it of Italian and European border control policies.
