Francesc Trabal i Massimo Bontempelli: dues trajectòries heterodoxes que s’emmirallen trencant espills

Força sovint el nom de Francesc Trabal i Benessat (Sabadell, 1899 - Santiago de Xile, 1957) s’ha vist associat al de Massimo Bontempelli (Como, 1878 - Roma, 1960) i, arran d’aquest fet, l’objetiu del present article és interrogar-se sobre els motius que empenyeren la crítica catalana de l’època a posar-los en relació per a després esbrinar si, efectivament, els seus projectes literaris coincideixen plenament o si, en canvi, hi ha diferències substancials que cal tenir en compte. Per fer això s’ha considerat sobretot el període 1920-1935 –anys funamentals per a la superació de les avantguardes i la consolidació de la Modernitat–, en què tant el sabadellenc com l’italià estaven experimentant noves formes d’escriptura que posaven en entredit les fronteres entre la realitat i la ficció, mitjançant recursos metaficcionals, personatges peculiars i una imaginació i un humor que, a partir del realisme màgic i de l’estirabot, seran la xifra de les seves obres.

Quite often the name of Francesc Trabal i Benessat (Sabadell, 1899 - Santiago de Chile, 1957) has been related to that of Massimo Bontempelli (Como, 1878 - Rome, 1960). Starting from this assertion, the aim of the present article is to offer an overview of the reasons why catalan critics at the time tended to establish such a parallelism and then explore which kind of similarities and differences can be noticed between their literary projects. To do so we have taken into account the period from 1920 to 1935 (a key span of time for Avantgarde movements and Modernism), in which both Trabal and Bontempelli were trying new approaches to literary writing, questioning the boundaries between reality and fiction by using some metafictional devices, peculiar characters and an imagination and a humour that, based on the magic realism and the "estirabot", would be the distinctive features of their works.
