The cultural activity related to death is a traditional subject of anthropological reflection and ethnographic description. Techniques and strategies concerning the burial can be part of a widespread and multifaceted attempt to display symbols of status, in uncountable different and surprising ways. In this essay, the relation connecting prestige and burial is discussed with reference to ethnographic examples from Italy, Congo, Uganda and Ghana. By reading the cultural diversity of burial in different contexts, the very idea of prestige is moulded, modified, enriched.
