The use of phenyl formate as a carbon Monoxide surrogate in reductive cyclization of nitrobiphenyls catalyzed by palladium/phenanthroline complexes has been investigated and the reaction conditions optimized. The best conditions have been applied to the synthesis of several carbazoles in good to excellent yields.
