The Lauson (Cogne) and Lavassey (Rhêmes-Notre-Dame) glaciers receded dramatically since the end of the Little Ice Age, by 1.3 and 2.3 km respectively, with a remaining surface less than 30% of the original one. The glacial till in the foreland of the receding glaciers is normally colonized by vegetation, which, with feedback reactions, modifies the substrate transforming it into soil, able to support the growth of increasingly exigent plant species, in terms of fertility and nutrient availability. The two glacier forelands, both well above timberline, have a different lithology: the Lauson area is mainly on weakly weatherable gneiss, while the other is on weatherable and nutrient-rich calcschists. Despite this difference, primary succession and soil development are equally slow. Organic matter and nutrient accumulation, and soil acidification, necessary for the encroachment of grassland species, are extremely slow. The reason is the low precipitation (around 700 mm/y) and the cold temperatures, creating strong cryoturbations in the soils and creating interesting landforms in impressively short times, such as patterned ground and solifluction lobes.

Abstract
The reason is the low precipitation (around 700 mm/y) and the cold temperatures, creating strong cryoturbations in the soils and creating interesting landforms in impressively short times, such as patterned ground and solifluction lobes.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
