The article examines the rights and powers of the parties in regulating the arbitral proceedings, underlining that the parties usually set the rules for the appointment of arbitrators and leave the arbitrators free to determine how to conduct the proceedings. In this respect, arbitrators must comply with key rules, such as the adversarial principle and the principle of equal treatment of the parties, but, within these limits, they have full discretion in conducting the proceedings. Specific attention is dedicated to the time limits in arbitral proceedings and to the form of arbitrators’ decisions.
