La "Biblioteca Scientifica Internazionale" et ses consoeurs (1872-1891) : Circulation transculturelle du savoir sciéntifique à l’époque de l’evolutionnisme

The essay traces the history of the "Biblioteca scientifica internazionale", an Italian collection within the "International Scientific Series" (ISS) promoted by Edward L. Youmans for the Appleton publishing house in New York. Composed by four series, in English, French, German and Italian (plus one in Russian, which, however, was short-lived), the ISS is a transnational series of popular science, an expression of the culture of positivism. The analysis of the Italian section of this initiative, published in Milan by Dumolard, enables us to reflect on various aspects of the history of books and late 20th-century culture: from the reception of positivism in Italy to the attitude to popularisation of Italian scientists of the time.

Il saggio ripercorre la storia della "Biblioteca scientifica internazionale", collezione italiana in seno alla "International Scientific Series" (ISS) promossa da Edward L. Youmans per la casa editrice Appleton di New York. Suddivisa in quattro serie, in inglese, francese, tedesco, italiano (più una in russo, che però ebbe breve vita), la ISS è una collana transnazionale di alta divulgazione scientifica, espressione della cultura del positivismo. L'analisi della sezione italiana di questa iniziativa, pubblicata a Milano da Dumolard, consente riflessioni su diversi aspetti della storia del libro e della cultura tardo-ottocentesca: dalla ricezione del positivo in Italia all'attitudine alla divulgazione degli scienziati italiani dell'epoca.
