Population ageing requires new housing solutions, in order to reduce the frequency of inappropriate inpatient admissions by investing in prevention, self-care and rehabilitation within the community. Co-housing solutions can protect old people from the risks associated with loneliness, functional dependence and poverty. However, the spread of elderly co-housing in Italy is still in its infancy. This article aims to explore elderly cohousing solutions through five main themes retrieved from relevant policy documents released by the Regions: type of service, institutions involved, policy progress, specific recipients and links with healthcare. Elderly co-housing policies were found in 19 areas out of 21. A significant fragmentation both in policy type and progress was detected, with no apparent party affiliations. A clear set of outcomes is needed to support comparisons, evaluate cost effectiveness and support social prescribing.
