The essay studies the development of Welfare State institutions in Italy between the end of the 19th and the end of the 20th century. Particular attention is devoted to assistance, welfare and healthcare policies. The evolution of social security in the Peninsula considers the “discontinuity” aspects in those policies (such as the changes in political objectives and forms of citizenship in the 20th) and the “continuities” in the system, represented by the social and welfare institutions.
