International cooperation and private companies: The South-West block of the Mau Forest (Kenya). The text aims to contribute to the debate on the changing scenario of development cooperation by examining the role played by private companies. The case study presented is the nature conservation programme promoted by the ISLA-IDH organisation in the Mau forest in Kenya. The programme is implemented, among other donors, with the support of multinational tea companies operating in the area. The article describes the origin of this initiative, the way it operates and the many critical issues that emerge. These include the implementation of conservation measures aimed at excluding local communities from the forest for the benefit of plantation agriculture.
Il testo vuole contribuire al dibattito relativo al mutato scenario della cooperazione allo sviluppo approfondendo il ruolo svolto dalle imprese private. Il caso studio presentato è il programma di conservazione della natura promosso dall’organizzazione ISLA-IDH nella foresta Mau in Kenya realizzato, tra i vari donatori, con il supporto delle multinazionali del tè operanti in loco. L’articolo illustra l’origine di tale iniziativa, le modalità con cui opera e le molteplici criticità presenti. Fra queste, emerge l’implementazione di interventi di conservazione volti all’esclusione delle comunità locali dalla foresta, a beneficio dell’agricoltura di piantagione.
