The essay tackles the ways in which a typically oral medium, radio, handles the dramatic text in its apparatus of stage directions and in the adaptive process leading to the radio dramatic form. The stage direction occupies a kind of “no-man’s land” between orality and writing, not easy to adapt to radio drama as can be inferred from a comparison between the English (BBC) and the Italian (RAI) approach to prescriptive and descriptive elements of the dramatic text. My analysis will be centred particularly on Harold Pinter’s theatre and on its tradition in Italian broadcast history.

Abstract
The essay tackles the ways in which a typically oral medium, radio, handles the dramatic text in its apparatus of stage directions and in the adaptive process leading to the radio dramatic form. The stage direction occupies a kind of “no-man’s land” between orality and writing, not easy to adapt to radio drama as can be inferred from a comparison between the English (BBC) and the Italian (RAI) approach to prescriptive and descriptive elements of the dramatic text. My analysis will be centred particularly on Harold Pinter’s theatre and on its tradition in Italian broadcast history.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
