The essay presents a parallel reading of the Dante studies by Luigi Pietrobono and Francesco Ercole from the late 19th-century until the end of WWII. It underlines their specificities as well as their peculiarities, placing them in the charged cultural and literary context of the times. Despite their strong differences and orientation, Pietrobono and Ercole’s Dante scholarships show – especially during the fascist ventennio – a characteristic realignment, all the more in the shared emphasis on Dante as an ‘example’ for a moral and political rebirth.

Abstract
The essay presents a parallel reading of the Dante studies by Luigi Pietrobono and Francesco Ercole from the late 19th-century until the end of WWII. It underlines their specificities as well as their peculiarities, placing them in the charged cultural and literary context of the times. Despite their strong differences and orientation, Pietrobono and Ercole’s Dante scholarships show – especially during the fascist ventennio – a characteristic realignment, all the more in the shared emphasis on Dante as an ‘example’ for a moral and political rebirth.Pubblicazioni consigliate
