The present paper aims at offering food for thought on the complex relationship between the advisory and contentious jurisdiction of the ECtHR. A recent decision delivered by the ECtHR on its competence in giving an advisory opinion on the Oviedo Convention offers the opportunity to deepen the issue of the limits and the conditions on which the different advisory opinion mechanisms within the ECHR system can be sought, received, and acted on.
