The article explores the relationship between Caesar’s use of speeches in the BGall and the way discourses are employed in ancient historiography by starting from Thucydides’ famous statement in I 22, 1. The paper tackles such topic by examining the words pronounced by the leader of the Eburones Ambiorix and reported in V 27. A rhetorical analysis of the passage clarifies that Caesar employed artful rhetorical instruments to convey the impression that Ambiorix was communicating deceptive information, which, however, was considered reliable by the Roman commander Titurius Sabinus. The study finally argues that the BGall artful presentation of Ambiorix’ speech complies with Caesar’s self– presentation needs.
