The chapter investigates the extent to which the Modernist tag can make sense of Dhlomo’s short stories: while clearly showing several elements of melodrama, the stories also draw on some ‘narrative dissonances’, those narrative techniques that are usually inscribed into Modernist practice and that ‘illuminate the tension between the didactic aims that characterize Dhlomo’s fiction and the challenges of modernization’.
