This article explores the way in which common assumptions concerning poverty were used to construct persuasion strategies in Athenian forensic speeches. These rhetorical tactics were supported by the dramatized presentation to the court of "poor people". They provide valuable information of the perception of - and imagery on - poverty in the Athenian society of the late fifth and fourth centuries B.C.
