Thee aim of this article is to explore the nature of the Ptolemaic cleruchic system, in its legal, social, and economic evolution, with a focus on the first century BC. e military nature of this institution, the influences exerted by the Egyptian and Persian developments, as well as by the original Athenian model, will be examined. the main interest will be centered on the problem of the supposed “demilitarization” of the cleruchs at the end of the Ptolemaic period, in the context of the nature and autonomy of the Egyptian army under Cleopatra VII.
