The Husserlian analyses on"phantasy and image consciousness"gathered in Husserliana XXIII (1980) can make a fundamental contribution to the most recent theories of the image (these investigations even seem to anticipate –and be able to dialogue with – some decisive issues raised by the “philosophies of the image” that have developed in the analytical field)."Of particular importance is the way in which Husserl deals with the relationship between the image experience and phantasy experience, going so far as to question the notion of “mental image”. Starting from this critical threshold, Husserl proposes a theory of phantasy as an intuitive presentification that is not founded on an iconic medium.
