This paper addresses some controversies about sex/gender differences and the ethical debate concerning intersexuality, parenthood, and family. It examines what intersexuality is and how we can know the correct gender of a child with an intersex condition. Also, it sets out the treatment of children with intersex conditions as guided by the belief that gender identity results from social rearing rather than biological factors, and questions whether children with intersex should be raised without a gender (or in a third gender) and have surgery to make their genitals look more normal.
