I SERBELLONI: ARTI E COMMITTENZE DI UNA FAMIGLIA MILANESE TRA CINQUECENTO E SEICENTO

The research aims to retrace the events of the Serbelloni family and its historical-artistic implications during the second half of the Sixteenth century, when the family laid the foundations for its future economic and social fortune thanks to the kinship with the Milanese pope Pius IV, Giovanni Angelo Medici di Marignano 1559-1565) and the successes of some members. Through ancient and modern bibliography and above all thanks to the documentary excavation in various Milanese and Roman archives, the investigation helps to reconstruct, define and deepen the role of the Serbelloni as intermediaries for the artistic and architectural enterprises promoted by Pope Pius IV and some episodes of commissioning and collecting that directly concern the soldier Gabrio Serbelloni (1509-1580) and his brothers and descendants, in order to add a piece to the study of the social history of art and the history of collecting in early Spanish Milan.
