My dissertation, entitled "Le versioni omeriche di Melchiorre Cesarotti: introduzione, analisi e commento", aims to present an overall picture of the Homeric studies carried out by Melchiorre Cesarotti during his career as a professor in Padua and, specifically, to offer a study of the editorial, critical and translation work done by him on the Iliad in the two editions published in Padua, the first between 1786 and 1794 (at the Penada publisher) and the second between 1798 and 1802 (at the publisher Brandolese). The thesis is divided into two parts: on the one hand, the first traces the long period of Cesarotti’s Homeric criticism starting from his modernist turn of 1762, on the other it reconstructs the translation studies that he deepens in the years of his academic chair; the second part presents a textual analysis of his translations of the Iliad and a synthesis of the peculiarities of the poetic translation, aimed at carrying out both a poetic and moral reform of the Homeric poem.
