Objectives. To review the diagnosis, causes, treatment, and possible complications of impacted supernumerary fourth molars on the basis of data reported in the literature and our own clinical experience. Materials and methods. We report three cases of supernumerary fourth molars that were treated by surgical extraction. Results and conclusions. None of the patients who underwent surgery experienced intraoperative- or postoperative complications. Surgical extraction of the supernumerary tooth eliminates the risk of complications such as root resorption involving adjacent teeth, delayed eruption of permanent teeth, dental crowding, and the development of odontogenic cysts. © 2011 Elsevier Srl.
