The purpose of this paper is to explain how people, by innovating, can remain in the labour market. The paper examines the literature on the impact of technologies on the labour market, inequality and creativity and it provides a conceptual framework to interpret the current and future scenarios for employment. Innovative behaviours, interdisciplinary knowledge and creativity should be actively encouraged to enable people to increase their likelihood of being employed. The main implication is that lifelong learning and education should be prioritized to reduce inequality, even though the question about the role of public policies requires more insights. The key findings of the paper are the consequences of the broader interpretation of the concepts traditionally associated with entrepreneurial and managerial occupations. The current and future workers should be increasingly entrepreneurs of themselves in order to achieve and maintain their employability over time.
