The newly built ultraviolet Raman–Brillouin spectrometer at the Università di L’Aquila is described. We have used it to perform accurate ultraviolet and visible Brillouin spectra of glass-forming glycerol. Data with high contrast and high dynamic range in the unexplored region of wave vectors from 40 up to about 70 μm-1 have been obtained for the first time. The spectra are analysed in terms of generalized hydrodynamics with a frequency-dependent viscosity. © 2004 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. All rights reserved.
