Abstract

This article aims to show, in a synthetic way, the most essential phases of the process of renewal of Italian viticulture carried out during the period between 1945 and 1963, when, at the end of many debates and discussions, the regulations on the controlled designation of origin (in Italian DOC, Denominazione d'Origine Controllata) are finally promulgated by the DPR of July 12, 1963, n. 930. These are the years during which a large part of Italian winegrowers organized themselves and prepared for the great development of the wine sector which, from the beginning of the 1960s, triggered investments to improve the quality of local products. This will facilitate the distribution of Italian wines in markets around the world, including high-end ones: these wines are becoming ever more competitive, also managing to compete with the best French wines until then considered the main reference model. After giving some information concerning the evolution of the wine sector before the second post-war period, this article indicates the first phases of the transformation of a productive sector which will give a decisive contribution to the great success of the Italian food and wine registered in the world in the last decades of the twentieth century, It is a modification of the production strategy which concerns all the rural world and which arrives in a phase of transition marked by a difficult adaptation to the social and economic changes generating the first part of the “Thirty Glorious Years” in the Western world and in particular for all that is related to the new agricultural policies linked to the integration process: the dimension of the foodstuffs markets increases as well as the level of competition, which obliges to improve the value for money without lowering the latter too much.
