From March 1978 to September 1978, the authors used 256 expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) grafts in 188 patients for reconstructive arterial surgery. One hundred and twenty-six PTFE grafts were utilized for patch angioplasty in 99 patients after 50 carotid artery endarterectomies, 3 subclavian artery endarterectomies and 52 endarterectomies of the aortoiliac and/or iliofemoral axis. The authors emphasize that PTFE is a suitable alternative to the saphenous vein for vessel arterioplasty when the vein is not available or to conserve autogenous saphenous vein for possible future vascular reconstruction.
