The aim of this work is to present the state of the art on the physiology, diagnosis, pathology and treatment of esophageal diseases through a review of the most recent literature. Among the various items covered by this review, the following are of the utmost interest: new pathologic and biologic staging of esophageal cancer, indications for and results of diagnostic imaging investigations, new cytoreductive multimodality therapies, precancerous lesions, the latest news on Barrett's esophagus, new knowledges concerning the physiopathology and treatment of gastroesophagel reflux disease and esophageal motor disorders, and most recent trends in the treatment of esophageal varices.
