The article investigates the way contemporary and subsequent Russian critics explained and used the obvious similarity between William Hogarth and Pavel Fedotov (1815-1852), one of the first genre painters in Russia, the first to attempt satire in painting, for this reason called “the Russian Hogarth”. It focuses in particular on the different editions (1934-1973) of the book written about him as a key figure of his generation by Viktor Shklovsky, one of the leaders of the Formalist critical movement, revealing a possible unsuspected reading key.
