The origin of the Greek adverbs ending in -ινδα and referring to games (such as ἀκινητίνδα ‘who stirs first’) has always been a puzzle. Although various etymological hypotheses have been drawn to explain these adverbs within the context of Greek word formation processes, none has proven fully convincing yet. In this paper, drawing on a previous suggestion made by Chantraine, I try to explain the origin of the formant -ινδα as the result of linguistic contacts between Greek and Lydian.

Abstract

The origin of the Greek adverbs ending in -ινδα and referring to games (such as ἀκινητίνδα ‘who stirs first’) has always been a puzzle. Although various etymological hypotheses have been drawn to explain these adverbs within the context of Greek word formation processes, none has proven fully convincing yet. In this paper, drawing on a previous suggestion made by Chantraine, I try to explain the origin of the formant -ινδα as the result of linguistic contacts between Greek and Lydian.
