In terms of both content and form, then, Plato's 'erotic' dialogues (Lysis, Symposium and Phaedrus) should be regarded as even more closely interconnected than previously assumed. Their proximity, it is argued, is reflected in their early reception: Alexis’ Phaedrus toys with Plato’s homonymous dialogue while at the same time borrowing from the Symposium; more importantly, the play echoes the beginning of the Lysis, which, it is argued, resorts to verse (iambic trimeter followed by hexametric rhythm). Alexis seems to construe the Lysis as the work of a fellow playwright. His reference to the Lysis amounts to the earliest chapter in the literary reception of Platonic beginnings
