In this article we describe a series of readings that the heir to the throne Alexander Nikolaevich (1818–1881) gave of works by Pushkin between 1829 and 1837. Various figures from the world of the court took part in these readings, from the poet Zhukovskii to the teacher Pletnev, from the heir’s classmates to members of his family. In the article we show how Pushkin’s texts simultaneously took on very different meanings and purposes according to the participants and to the ways in which Pushkin’s writings were read. Basing on sources still not examined, such as Alexander’s course notes and his diary, we highlight the place occupied by Pushkin’s work in the heir’s education and in the sphere of court culture, and the way in which those court readers used and gave sense to Pushkin’s writings.
