In this essay I discuss a particular group of manuscripts of Hrabanus Maurus’ De rerum naturis (family g). though none of these manuscripts antedates the 11th century, their variant readings offer evidence for an early alternative version of the text, which may have been promoted by either Hrabanus himself at a late stage in his career or by someone belonging to Hrabanus’ cultural milieu. to shed light on the authorship, date, and place of composition of the recensio g, a particular attention is given to the so-called Scholia Vallicelliana, an apparatus of carolingian glosses on Isidore’s Etymologiae which shows a close relation with a number of textual variants of y.
