This chapter discusses how genetic sterility can be induced by transgenic methods in mosquitoes, with a focus on Anopheles gambiae. It examines mechanisms for inducing sterility that have already been identified or that represent promising targets, and reviews current research on genetic sterility in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. In the last section, this chapter discusses how some of the most promising gene engineering technologies can be utilized to introduce the desired mutations in the mosquito genome.

Abstract

This chapter discusses how genetic sterility can be induced by transgenic methods in mosquitoes, with a focus on Anopheles gambiae. It examines mechanisms for inducing sterility that have already been identified or that represent promising targets, and reviews current research on genetic sterility in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. In the last section, this chapter discusses how some of the most promising gene engineering technologies can be utilized to introduce the desired mutations in the mosquito genome.
