My paper will analyze the theme of syncretism in the work "Les Cognoissances necessaires" (1584) by the baroque writer Béroalde de Verivlle. This text starts from the Sacred Scriptures, in particular fronm Genesis and therefore seems to be to be a work entirely linked to a traditional religious spirit. However, there are numerous elements that refer to a pagan thought: the presence of the Muses, of the androgynous theme (inspired by Plato) and finally of the Great Work, alchemy.

Abstract

My paper will analyze the theme of syncretism in the work "Les Cognoissances necessaires" (1584) by the baroque writer Béroalde de Verivlle. However, there are numerous elements that refer to a pagan thought: the presence of the Muses, of the androgynous theme (inspired by Plato) and finally of the Great Work, alchemy.
