A short survey on islands viewed as 'blessed places' is presented, from imaginary (utopian) to real ones: the 'Fortunate Isles' featuring in Timaios and Diodorus, and longed for by Sertorius in Sallust and Plutarch; the arva beata, where Horace exhorts the Romans to take refuge during the civil wars; Seneca's Corsica, a place where the sapiens - although exiled - experiences true freedom; Lerins, an insular paradise for the monks living there from the 5th century AD.
