Abstract

From the earliest times, a small number of printers have gained paramount recognition in the history of printed books with the typographic quality of their editions. During the 20th century, with the total domination of machinery and industrial printing procedures, those who obstinately continued to practice the art of fine letterpress printing with movable type harked back to those early printers for inspiration. The work of Alberto Tallone and his successors from the early 1930s to the present has become a part of this tradition. Their Manuale Tipografico, following examples of famous predecessors like Pierre-Simon Fournier and Giambattista Bodoni, contains analysis, testimony and paradigms. The first volume (2005) is dedicated to title-pages and roman and italic uppercase letters, its complement (2006) discusses the aesthetics of indices, colophons and prospecti and the second volume (2008) is concerned with layout, typefaces and formats.
