The national policy and organization for the in situ conservation of cattle breeds is presented. The challenge of conservation is the achievement of economic competitiveness of local cattle breeds and preservation of adaptation to a wide variety of agronomic and productive contexts. The increase of competitiveness through selection, marketing and promotion of their ecological value is discussed. Technical and scientific aspects of the genetic management of populations are described with reference to selected and nonselected breeds.
