OBJECTIVES Aim of this paper is to report the most recent data related to oral mucosal diseases and tobacco smoking habits. In particular, will be discussed the relationships of cigarette smoking and oral premalignant disorders and oral cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Recent literature was primary evaluated with a search on PubMed and Embase. RESULTS Medical and dental literature confirm that smoking is positively associated with oral lesions such as leukoplakia and erythroplakia - which have the potential for malignant transformation - and also with oral cancer. CONCLUSIONS The dental team is involved in secondary prevention mainly aiming at the early diagnosis of cancer/pre-cancer and promoting treatment at an early stage to prevent further progression.
