Starting from the assumption that Shakespeare is at the same time nation-less and nation-bound, both a global and a local phenomenon, our seminar shall discuss on the various strategies through which Shakespearean films (or the uses of Shakespeare within non-Shakespearean films) mediate between apparent conflicting opposites. Contributions to this seminar will analyse both the intersection between identity, race and difference in films which play an important role in the construction of national identities and the ways different (also conflicting) codes, genres and styles work in order to render or to appease conflictual situations in Shakespeare’s universe of discourse. Particularly welcome will be contributions focused on the filmic uses of visual arts.
