The author focuses first on Augustine’s experience both as a student and as a teacher of rhetoric, discussing also some of the linguistic remarks Augustine presents in his ‘Dialectica’. In the second part of the paper, she examines some passages from the ‘Confessions’, showing Augustine’s attempt at creating a prose which aims ‘ad unius Dei laudem atque dilectionem’: in fact, in these passages he seems to avail himself of his deep knowledge of grammar and rhetoric (etymologic play, rhetorical figures, search for euphony, etc.), in order to emphasize the meaning conveyed by the text itself.

Abstract
The author focuses first on Augustine’s experience both as a student and as a teacher of rhetoric, discussing also some of the linguistic remarks Augustine presents in his ‘Dialectica’. In the second part of the paper, she examines some passages from the ‘Confessions’, showing Augustine’s attempt at creating a prose which aims ‘ad unius Dei laudem atque dilectionem’: in fact, in these passages he seems to avail himself of his deep knowledge of grammar and rhetoric (etymologic play, rhetorical figures, search for euphony, etc.), in order to emphasize the meaning conveyed by the text itself.Pubblicazioni consigliate
